One of the most exciting experiences as a mom is undoubtedly sending your kids off to college. Helping my two daughters decorate their dorm was so fun and also so challenging. We had to take a small, fairly unattractive space and make it homey, stylish, and organized. There was so much they wanted to bring with them and very limited places to store it all. Here are the top 5 functional necessities that helped maximize their space and kept their dorm neat while also keeping their stuff accessible.
Fridge cart: Because dorm rooms are so small having multitasking pieces is crucial! This fridge cart keeps all of your snacks, plates, and utensils organized and put away without taking up any of your valuable shelf space. And having your fridge on wheels makes moving it a cinch! This is a MUST-HAVE item!
Storage ottomans: Another multifunctional piece we love is a storage ottoman. It not only adds additional seating (and/or help getting up on a raised bed) but also provides out of sight extra storage space. It’s one of those great little accessories that help with clutter control, plus our tufted ottoman with nailhead details is super chic.
Hanging shoe rack: Dorms normally offer limited closet space so in order to keep all your shoes off the floor and easy to access I highly recommend investing in a hanging shoe rack. Hang it on the inside of your closet door or on the door to your room and you’ve got a great way to keep your shoes organized and accessible!
Under bed drawers: if you have the option to raise your bed it’s a great way to add some extra hidden storage space. The space under your bed is perfect for these wide clear plastic drawers which make it easy to find and get to all your items. I also recommend adding a bedskirt. It keeps all your stored items out of sight and makes a basic dorm bed seem a little more homey.
Folding Stackable BookShelf: one of the best places to maximize vertical space in a dorm is your desk. These folding stackable shelves are not only great for organization, but super easy for move-in (they come pre-assembled and fold flat). Set one on top of your desk or stack two on the floor for more storage space.
